SILAN 99 - La Coruña
The SILAN Society held their XI Annual Scientific Meeting in the city of La Coruña from September 14 to 17, 1999. There were 250 registered participants and 70 spouses. There were 125 scientific presentations between posters and oral presentations. A teaching course in spinal anatomy and pathology was offered prior to the meeting, coordinated by Drs. Naidich and Ruscalleda. This course included 17 conferences covering anatomy, pathology, imaging and neurointerventional techniques focused on the spinal column and the spinal cord. The second part of the meeting emphasized advances in endovascular treatment of cerebral arteriovenous malformations, fibrinolysis, aneurysms and carotid angioplasty. This course material was coordinated by Dr. Eduardo García Cervigón, President of SILAN 99.

Awards to best scientific presentations:
Premio Dr. Juan Taveras:
awarded to Dr. Orlando Díaz, for: "Angiografía cerebral por sustracción digital con Gadolinio. Experiencia en 12 pacientes en la Clínica Fundación Santa Fé de Bogotá, Colombia".
Premio Dr. Fernando Viñuela: awarded to Dr. José M. Modenesi-Freitas et al, for "Embolizao de Aneurisma Cerebral com GDC: Experincia de 100 casos tratados.", Sao Paulo, Brasil.
Best Poster: awarded to Dr. Alvaro Magalhaes et al, for "Arteria carotídea extracraniana : correlación entre Doppler-color, angioresonancia, angio-CT, sonografía endovascular y arteriografía", Sao Paulo, Brasil.
Best Poster by a Resident: Dr. Andrés Arbeláez et al, for: "Intervencionismo espinal: un campo amplio para el neurorradiólogo intervencionista", Barcelona, Spain.

The social activities included a Welcome Reception at the Palacio de Ayuntamiento, a tour to Costa da Morte, a visit to Santiago de Compostela and a Closing Ceremony and Banquet. Through this means we wish to recognize Dr. García Cervigón and his Organizing Comittee for the scientific, social and economic success of SILAN 99 - La Coruña meeting.

SILAN 2000 Meeting
The XII Meeting of SILAN will be held in the city of Punta del Este, Uruguay from the 10th to the 14th day of December, 2000. The organization of this meeting is being coordinated by Drs. Andrés de Tenyi and Fernando Viñuela in combination with the Sociedad Uruguaya de Neurorradiología. Instead of the traditional pre-meeting categorical course in Neurosciences, this time we will enjoy "Neuroradiology of the Third Millenium", an up-to-date state of the art presentation of the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic advances in Neuroradiology. Topics included are:
Three-Dimensional Imaging
Interventional Neuroradiology in intracranial vascular malformative pathology
Functional Imaging
Neurodegenerative and Metabolic Diseases
Molecular Biology in Interventional Neuroradiology
Diagnostic Neuroradiology in Cerebral Ischemia
Interventional Neuroradiology in Cerebral Ischemia
Modern Imaging Evaluation of Spinal Pathology
Interventional Neuroradiology in Spinal Pathology
Modern Imaging in Tumoral Pathology of the Central Nervous System
Interventional Neuroradiology in Tumoral Pathology of the Central nervous System

For additional information on SILAN 2000 - Punta del Este visit the Meeting section of this webpage, or directly contact Dr. De Tenyi (Tel: 59-82-487-1951, Fax: 59-82-710-8017 or Email: detenyi@netgate.com.uy).

The upcoming meetings of our SILAN Society will be held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia (2001), Santiago, Chile (2002), Lisbon, Portugal (2003), Salvador,Bahia, Brasil (2004) and Lima, Perú (2005).

SILAN Journals
At the present time, SILAN no longer publishes an official journal. The RILAN (Revista Ibero Latino Americana de Neurorradiología) has been discontinued. On a similar note, Dr. Thomas Naidich has announced that the IJNR (International Journal of Neuroradiology) will be discontinued effective December 1999. The Silan Board of Directors is exploring other options for publishing their member's scientific work, including an electronic journal in our SILAN webpage.

World Federation of Neuroradiology
During the meeting of the Executive Committee of SILAN, Dr. Lylyk exposed his concern regarding the SILAN position and recognition within the frame of international neuroradiologic societies. A goal of SILAN should be to enhance and strengthen the communication with sister societies. In the process of achieving this goal, we created a Joint Society Committee (chaired by Dr. Ruscalleda), an Endovascular Training Committee (chaired by Dr. Alfredo Casasco) and an Education Committee (chaired by Dr. Naidich). In addition, the Executive Committee is seriously considering recommending for SILAN to join the World Federation of Neuroradiology (WFN) Several SILAN members are also in the Executive Board of the WFN (Drs. Taveras, Rodríguez-Carbajal, Castillo, Ruscalleda). There could be important political advantage for SILAN to join the WFN. More news about this possibility will be presented in upcoming SILAN Bulletins.

Treasury
As all of you know, professional societies maintain their economic viabilityfrom income generated from payment of dues and profits from their meetings. SILAN utilizes its treasury for support of the Annual Meeting, for scholarships in diagnostic and interventional neuroradiology and for the support of means of communication among members (like the SILAN webpage). Although we had 254 members prior to SILAN 99 meeting, only 144 of them consistently pay their yearly dues.In order to maintain the economic health of our society we request all members to live up to their annual dues payment. Dr. Ramón E. Figueroa is transferring the Treasury duties to Dr. Mauricio Castillo, our new Treasurer, who will be taking over this responsibility starting January, 2000. A full Treasurer's Report will be published in the upcoming Bulletin.

Educational Scholarships
SILAN sponsors educational scholarships in both Diagnostic Neuroradiology and Interventional Neuroradiology. The SILAN-MCG Scholarship of Diagnostic Neuroradiology is coordinated by Dr. Ramón E. Figueroa in Augusta, Georgia, USA. The SILAN-ENERI Scholarship of Interventional Neuroradiology is coordinated by Dra. Rosanna Ceratto, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Complete information and requirements are outlined in the SILAN webpage (Scholarships).
